Food & Country Screening, followed by a Q + A with Ruth Reichl
Please join us for a screening of Food and Country at Upstate Films on Wednesday, November 13 at 6:30 pm.
This revealing documentary which takes viewers into the lives of independent ranchers, farmers and chefs around the country, all struggling with the breakdown of the food supply chain in the face of Covid and its aftermath.
When restaurants are closed, or serving just a fraction of the diners they did previously, and farmers have already planted their fields, where does the food go? How do they keep the families who work for them afloat? How do chefs ensure that their staffs have enough money to pay their rents?
Ruth Reichl, the celebrated food writer (former editor of Gourmet and former restaurant critic for the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times) and author (Comfort Me with Apples, Garlic and Sapphires, Save Me the Plums), leads the doc’s conversations with a remarkable collection of growers and cooks. The risks they take and the determination and creativity they muster to maintain ethical and regenerative practices, when easier and cheaper low-quality alternatives are available, is profoundly moving.
And hopeful. With people as dedicated as those we meet in the film, we have a fighting chance of a resilient future.
A conversation with Ruth Reichl (a Hudson Valley resident), moderated by baker/artist/writer Lexie Smith, will follow the screening.
Hope to see you there!
