Join us for a day of nurturing nature! We’ve joined with the Town and Village of Rhinebeck to put on a festival of earth-supporting activities at Thompson-Mazzarella (aka Starr) Park from 12-3 pm on April 27. Help spruce up the pollinator garden (gloves are a good idea), walk with a Winnakee Land Trust guide and learn how to spot (and tackle!) invasives. There will be demos of electric garden tools (blowers, trimmers), a herpetologist walk with a 6th grader who’s something of an amphibian/reptile whisperer, seed-ball making with Sandy from Morton Library, and loads more stuff. Great walk through Ferncliff yesterday, our first Walk the Land outing this year with Winnakee Land Trust. Bob Davis, Winnakee’s exec director and a longtime forester, gave us loads of clues for identifying trees in winter—from the rounded cluster buds of white oaks to the elongated sulphur-yellow buds of bitter nut hickories, to the distinctive patterns of blue beeches (aka musclewood). The thorns of butternut hickories need no introduction! Thanks to all who came along, and to Ferncliff’s Ranger Knick Staley for sharing the forest’s history. Along with swapping seeds and sipping cider, we’ll have a winter sowing station for those who want to get a jumpstart on the growing season. Registration is requested, just so we have sufficient supplies. And if you have a hankering to grow some peanuts this year, a super fun crop, we’ve got northern-adapted seeds to share. I stand in awe of seeds! I’ve had these green cotton seeds which were harvested in 2014, and given to me at a Seed Swap at Omega. I decided to germ test them before I put them in the compost, and, low and behold, they are sprouting! It’s going to be hard for me not to plant these. Peanuts! We (the Seedy Sisters, which includes some Dirty Gaians) grew two types of Valencia goobers at the #MortonRhinecliff Seed plot in the Rbk Community Garden—one set of plants was started early under lights, the other, a Northern Hardy batch from our friends at #FruitionSeeds, we planted directly in the ground. Both did well, enjoying the wet summer no doubt. Appreciative shout out to Betty, Bob, Tina and Lulu whose fur contributions (a lotta brushing) strategically placed around the plants seem to have deterred rodents from getting to the nuts before we did. #northeastpeanuts? #whynot!
