Thank You for Everything

Strawberries popping at one of the new beds at the Chancellor Livingston School garden.

The winding down of the growing season always comes with a little twinge of sadness—and a big sigh of relief. It’s a lot of work keeping our gardens, yards, meadows, trees and all their micro-ecosystems healthy!

This time of year gives us the pause we need to regroup, recoup and reflect on all we have to be grateful for—which is a lot. First on the list is you. If you’ve come to any of our walks, talks, workshops or screenings we consider you part of the Dirty Gaia community, a diverse group with a common focus—healthy food and a vibrant environment nurtured through community, sustainability and regenerative practices. Thank you for supporting and being part of us.

2024 was a busy year. We brought back the Gardeners Round Table and Edible Gardens Tour (expanded to include native gardens). Our Walk the Land series with Winnakee Land Trust included a winter tree identification at Fernclif Forest and a meadowing how-to at Vlei Marsh. We supported the annual Seed Swap at Morton Memorial Library, helped organize Rhinebeck’s first Earth Day Fair, and installed a garden at Chancellor Livingston School (above) where we led afterschool garden classes in the spring and fall.

Our basketweaving workshop with Circle Creative Collective found a large group of us sewing phragmites—a not always welcome but impressively resilient species—into tight coils with colorful threads at Ferncliff’s pavilion.
With our friends at Upstate Films, we sponsored screenings of two documentaries, Common Ground and Food and Country. The latter sold out thanks to the presence of its producer and star, Ruth Reichl.
We’re ever mindful of how lucky we are to have the community (you!) and partners that we do, and this is the time of year we make a point of reminding you of our gratitude. Thank you so much for walking, creating, observing and supporting the natural world with us.
We have some engaging and info-packed events in the works—including a visit to Branchwater Farm and its distillery. More on that soon.
We look forward to seeing you in the new year, and wish you a season of happiness and abundance in the meantime.
