Talking Invasives: The Cons and the Pros
Have you noticed that cattails are disappearing and the feathery-topped stalks of phragmites are taking their place? Seen wetlands overrun by purple loosestrife? Erik Kiviat, executive director of Hudsonia Ltd. has been studying these and other invasive plants since the 1970s, observing their evolution with native species and wildlife. Hear his expert advice on how (and when) to manage such regional invasives, mitigating their negative impacts while recognizing the adaptive beneficial roles they play in their unique ecosystems. Even water chestnuts and Japanese knotweed (a favored nesting site for songbirds) have their good sides!
This talk is free and open to the public and will be held at Morton Memorial Library in Rhinecliff. Questions about the event? Email hello@dirtygaia.org.
